Enjoy this uplifting and lush synthesis of our musical lifetimes...

The friendships reach way back, but joining forces as Commodore Callahan is a relatively recent thing for Don Kane (bass, clarinet, vocals, music); Lauren Speeth (lyrics, vocals, backup instruments); and Josh Workman (guitar, synth, vocals). We decided we should try banding together, bringing our combined musical presence to awareness-raising. We're following our album with social justice anthems which are stylistically very different, to showcase the breadth of our range. Love is Here we describe as "upbeat spiritual music with a timeless/retro gospel/r&b feel" while Rough Justice is straight-up rock, and the forthcoming single Such a Crime is more in the style of a folk song. We held our CD release debut concert at the San Francisco fundraiser for Boys Hope Girls Hope in June, 2009.

...it's a call and response (join in the song!)

We wonder: what if there were a grass roots movement — based in song — fostering an ethic of sharing and understanding, and open hearted compassion towards the last and least, right here in our country? What would that look like? What would it be called? ...Second Saturdays for Soup-Kitchens? Would you join in such a song? Would you add your voice, and your own song? Are you already singing? Would you like more songs? We've put easy guitar chords on this website, to invite you to join ours also. Take a listen to Rough Justice, which juxtaposes the powerfully beautiful vocals of Alison Lewis against a harsh exposé of youth in the U.S. prison system, and to Such a Crime which tells the story of a homeless Vietnam vet, and asks whether there might be a better, more compassionate solution. Be that change, that we all want to see!

More about our CD "Love is Here"

We were going to name it "One Way Track." after all, so many of the lyrics arrived in a burst of inspiration on a train ride from Seattle to San Francisco. We were going to write about how a compass tracks true when we're following our own authentic path and when (to paraphrase Merton) we answer the divine call to create a life of meaning that reflects God's word spoken in free will. We even had a cover designed. Then it hit us: God is Love, and we just had to change the title. Love is Here. It's in the music. It's all around you and inside you, ready to comfort, uplift, bless and heal. We've worked very hard on this debut album to produce a musical offering with songs that speak to everyone; good, solid and grounding music that resonates in the soul. Love is Here. Unconditional and everlasting and available at any moment that we turn towards it and let it in. May it heal our hearts, for only in healing ourselves and growing in compassion can we hope to heal this broken world.
